Dreams and Our Spiritual Gates

Dreams from the kingdom of darkness can pollute our spiritual gates. Even while “hearing” a dream, an interpreter “walks” through it to “see” what the dreamer is seeing. Some of these spiritual “places” are dark and contaminating.

Therefore, we must anoint and protect our ear and eye gates with the blood of Jesus, the fire of the Holy Spirit, the Word of God, and our spiritual armor and weapons.

What are our Spiritual Gates?

Our dreams are gateways to spiritual worlds. A spiritual gate may be a physical access point or an invisible portal. In a dream, we may see an opening in the clouds, a door, a transitional place connecting two distinct areas, or another dimension. (Also see post Doorways and Door Dreams).

As much as they contain our soul and spirit and host a most hallowed Resident – the Holy Spirit, our bodies are temples. Accordingly, our eyes, ears, nose, mouth, umbilicus, urogenital parts, and anus are both physical and spiritual gates.

Scriptures tell us that faith enters when we hear the word of God. However, we sometimes carelessly listen to the wrong kinds of words. In such cases, unbelief can sneak in through the same spiritual doors (Numbers 13:25-14:10) **. Similarly, our eyes are portals that enlighten us with God’s Light or dark light.  Less apparent spiritual gates include the crown of the head, palm side of the hands, and soles of the feet.

Dark Dreams and Spiritual Gates

Our spirits never sleep. Therefore, Dream Warriors must be careful of what we watch, listen to, and read when awake. Doing this enables us to exercise the same discernment level in our dreams. Job, regarded as upright by God, wisely made a covenant with his eyes not to use them for sin. (Job 31:1)

Undoubtedly, the darker this world becomes, the greater the incidence of demonic oppression and possession. Consider how deranged a person must be to slash a helpless, innocent infant or child to death.  Yet these atrocities are happening almost daily.

Walking through a dark dream is similar to watching something on television. For this reason, when someone sends me a dream at bedtime, I typically wait until the next day to read it so the images do not influence my dreams. We must be careful not to venture through a dark dream or any dream without the Holy Spirit.  I suspect this is why Biblical dream interpreters like Joseph and Daniel could confidently state that only the Lord interprets dreams (Genesis 41:15-16; Daniel 2:27-28).

Nevertheless, sometimes God will intentionally hide the meaning of a dream for unknown reasons. Therefore, it is unwise to demand or manufacture an interpretation (Matthew 13:10-16; Isaiah 50:10-11). God may have already spoken to us in other ways, or perhaps the dream is sealed for a future date (Job 33:14, Daniel 12:9)

Protecting Our Spiritual Gates

• Lift up your heads O ye gates! (Psalm 24) We must direct our spiritual gateways and perceptions toward God.
• Similarly, Psalm 121 says, “I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? ” We are to focus our eyes on our Source of help and on His Word.
• God anoints our Spiritual Gates with Truth, because the anointing teaches us all things. (Psalm 23l:5, 1 John 2:27)

In our previous post, we looked at various reasons for dark dreams. Dream Warriors must keep unclean souvenirs, talismans, mirrors, crystal balls, occult games and activities, and anything that welcomes other gods or demons away from our homes. Protecting our spiritual gates will have a positive effect on our dreams.

Several years ago, I was experiencing recurrent oppression. A friend of mine who was a highly gifted seer and intercessor walked through my house. She passed by a particular mirror about three or four times, pausing each time. She asked me where I got it. It was a secondhand acquisition which was an excellent find for the price. Surprisingly, she said, “This has to go. It’s a portal.”

We immediately broke the mirror, closed the portal, threw away the pieces, and broke curses. Since then, I have learned to regularly clean my house of anything new or old that the Holy Spirit identifies as unclean. Expensive jewelry, new clothing, music CDs, artwork, and acquired furniture have gone out in the trash.

If you cannot discern its spiritual state, think twice before bringing home that heirloom, charming sale item, or thrift store bargain.

Dream Warrior: Responding to Dark Dreams

Your response to dark dreams and how they affect your spiritual gates is critical. Here are a few tips that have helped me:

• Always vocally reject words not from the Lord, whether written, audible, or spoken through a dream. Our mouths are very anointed.
• Write down your dream. Writing down a dream serves two purposes. First, the Bible instructs us to do this. So, we can trust that God knows best and do what He says. (Habakkuk 2:2). Second, we often recall more details in writing because we engage brain parts that activate memory. (Dreams vaporize quickly). Not to mention, dream interpretation can be challenging when receiving a dream in bits and pieces. Getting a text message three hours later, “Sorry, I completely forgot to share this part with you,” means relooking at the dream.
• Importantly, how we respond to dreams while asleep (as in spiritual lucid dreaming) largely depends on our spiritual walk when awake. Every Dream Warrior should learn how to use spiritual warfare to fight against dark dreams, perform self-deliverance, and cancel any recurring spiritual attacks against us and our loved ones. We must evict any evil “gatekeepers.” (Psalm 127:5, Ezekiel 21:22, Job 38:17)

Minding Our Spiritual Armor and Weapons

Do you know the state of your spiritual armor and weapons?

• Intercessors often quote (2 Corinthians 10:4): However, sometimes we overlook other necessary armor and weapons such as repentance, holiness, obedience (which is better than sacrifice), submission to the Holy Spirit (and to other members of the body of Christ), and honor.
• God selectively distributes gifts like mantles. Each is unique in its way. And given for a purpose. It is unwise to try to mimic someone else’s gifts. (Acts 19:13-16)
• We must also understand spiritual authority and take personal responsibility for exercising our faith instead of blaming others.
• Always rely on the Holy Spirit because emotionally disturbing dreams can distract us from recognizing the Lord in our dreams and receiving His instructions. Be intentional in looking for what the Lord is doing or saying.
