Doorways to Change and Transition

Three open doorways, two are blocked with walls, but one opens to a beautiful beach.

After her impressive rendition of a Whitney Houston classic and she was crowned Miss World 2019, Toni-Ann Singh was asked if she planned to showcase her beautiful voice professionally. Her response about doorways piqued my interest because the Holy Spirit recently spoke to me about doors: If the door opens… I will walk through it. In this post, we will look at some doorways and transition points that we may see in dreams and visions.

A Doorway open in Heaven

Open doors bring opportunities for change and transition. In the fourth chapter of the Book of Revelation in the Bible, the Apostle John saw a door “open in heaven.” He heard a voice say, “Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this.” The timeless portal he entered and the things he witnessed had to be stranger than those in episodes of Doctor Who!

Things looked pretty hopeless when in all of heaven, the earth, and under the earth, absolutely no one was found worthy to open or even to decode the scrolls containing the events of life! No one, that is, except the Lamb of God (Lord Jesus)! This was the crowning moment. John finally understood the magnitude of the sacrifice made by his Lord and Friend on behalf of every tribe and tongue and people and nation extending from the heavens to under the earth. Without this Revelation of Jesus Christ, John would not have been able to understand the extraordinary events he saw for the future. Jesus instructed John to “…Write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after this.” (1:19, 5:4-5 NKJV)

Doorways in Dreams

Doors (or gates) seen in dreams and visions may look like portals, ladders, revolving doors, skylights, trap doors, or even parting clouds. Doorways can be obscured by a privacy wall (similar to airport bathrooms), a hedge, or a large rock. For example, in C S Lewis’ first installment of his much beloved The Chronicles of Narnia, the doorway to that kingdom was inside an old wardrobe.

Tunnels, Bridges, Elevators in Dreams

Sometimes there is no obvious doorway; still, the dream or vision could show us transition or access something new through a tunnel, down a hallway, across a bridge, or up an elevator. Likewise, we might discern subtle changes in ambient lighting from dark to light (or vice versa). Transition lighting often marks the start or end of a transition period or a change of seasons in life.

Locked Doors or Doorways in Dreams

Getting past a locked door requires a “key” unless an angel comes to unlock it (as in Acts 5:19)! However, Isaiah 30:18 tells us the Lord longingly waits for us until we learn to wait for Him! Sometimes we need to ask, knock, or worship for a door to spring open (Matthew 7:7-8, Acts 16:25-26).

Making Choices in Dreams

Some dreams give us a choice between two or more doorways. There is no one-size-fits-all strategy for every life circumstance, but a wise rule of thumb is to walk through the open door (rather than kick down one that is shut). An open door typically leads to another open door, to another, until we arrive at our Destiny.

When multiple doors spontaneously open to us, we could feel like we’ve hit the jackpot. But one will usually be a better choice than others. The right door might not necessarily look glamorous or open the widest. Remember, the pathway to the Kingdom of Light is narrow and less traveled.

My dream shared here reflects this:

DREAM: A Narrow Doorway

DREAM: It was getting dark outside when I squeezed through a narrow entrance to a rather plain looking home where I lived. There were several large beds outside which prevented the front door from opening outwards fully. Inside the house was exceedingly well-lit and beautiful and my roommates were British (U.K.) royals!

DREAM INTERPRETATION: Through this dream, the Holy Spirit reinforced the knowledge that the Way into His Kingdom (U.K. symbol, Revelation 1:6) is through intimacy with the King (beds/bedrooms symbolize intimacy). It will become more evident to me (change of ambient lighting, a time of transition) that things of the Kingdom of Light are not typically attractive looking to this world nor easily accessed. 1 Peter 2:9 summarizes the entire dream.

Interpreting symbols in our dreams helps us to uncover instructions. We can also find answers through Bible reading, prayer, and communion with the Lord, or by reviewing an earlier dream, because the Holy Spirit speaks to us repeatedly; He knows how easily we get distracted!

He opens and no one will shut, and He shuts and no one opens.”

Jesus revealed that He is the Door [of doorways], and He has the Key that unlocks and locks (John 10: 7, Revelation 3: 7-8). So, as we enter a New Year and decade, let us be watchful and discerning for His guidance to transition …from glory to glory (2 Cor 3:18). Amen!
